Are there any plans to do so? It seems that it would make things
simpler if the mongrel version number matched the mongrel_cluster
version number. (I realize this is completely arbitrary).
Thoughts?

True, that is completely arbitrary :-p
Our last discussion was that would create a couple of utilities,
including
merging a modified version of cluster into the mongrel gem.
We currently have no timeline for such things.
