stick the connection details in database.yml

It should make no difference that the applications are on different
systems with different operating systems. The connection settings in
the application’s config/database.yml is all that matters. The host
should be the IP address (or hostname) of the database machine. If
you’re sure the database is active and you can’t connect, check that
your database machine’s firewall isn’t blocking connections on port
3306, which is used by MySQL.
