Is mandelbrot supposed to be exceedingly fast?

Hi.
After watching this

http://rubyconf2009.confreaks.com/20-nov-2009-13-15-jruby-everywhere-charles-nutter-and-thomas-enebo.html
around minute 28

I thought that jruby should be able to rock on a mandelbrot program.

However, running (naively) mandelbrot.rb · GitHub

it doesn’t seem to drop from 0.5 to 0.05s, but more like from 6 to 3
seconds, so not the same effect.

Is this expected? Is there code for that demo somewhere?

Thanks.

I’m not sure which demo script Tom used for that benchmark. The one in
our repository, bench_fractal, gets down close to 1s for me, but not
under a second.
