I would like my Radiant installation to have comments.
I see that there is an extension for comments.
Is this the way to go? Or is it better to set up a forum on the side?
For example El Derado

I see that my radiant installation is version 5.2
I understand that I need to upgrade. My installation is with
www.site5.com and it is a Unix-machine, which I am not so used to.
Is this easy? (to upgrade…)
Thanks!!

I think you can freeze edge - you’ll be able to find the instructions on
the Radiant CMS documentation site (or just do a search for radiant
freeze edge).
That said, in response to your earlier question, in my mind, there’s a
difference between comments and a forum. It could be said that a
commenting module is essentially a forum with the first comments being a
blog post or an article or something. In that sense, one could just use
a forum.
My sites http://onghu.com/te and http://openutk.org are actually
engineering community resources and therefore, I’m interested in
exploring both the avenues that you mention:
(1) Integration of comments
(2) Integration of a forum
…and I’m even keen on seeing if there’s a good way to:
Long nights ahead…
Cheers,
Mohit.

It does work, but there are some caveats:
It uses Akismet for spam detection. If you don’t want to use
Akismet, you have to write your own code.
Email addresses are required but it doesn’t do error handling
cleanly.
In fact, this second issue is a little tricky. I’ll post an email
about it.

- Integrate another Rails application (I need to see the plugins that
are there) and to- Use Radiant as a backend to provide content management in a
role-based access way
If you’re looking for a rails based forum, check out Beast:

I’ll second that recommendation. I’ve integrated Beast as an extension
to a Radiant site without too much trouble. The Beast code is very
clean. Unfortunately my “Beast extension” is not ready to be released
for the greater good anytime soon, but I’d like to at some point.

That would be cool to see. I’ve been debating doing that versus
fixing up the Comments extension for my needs.
How tightly do you have them integrated? Does creating a new page in
Radiant create a forum post? What about the two user models?
I wouldn’t mind using it for comments on my sites, but I don’t want to
force people to create an account.

The site is at http://www.nrgi-innovation.dk/forums - it is in Danish,
but it’ll give you an idea. The other pages at that site are all
served as pure Radiant pages.
Does creating a new page in
Radiant create a forum post?
No. Beast forums, topics and posts are separate models completely
unrelated to Radiant pages. I use it as a real forum, not for
commenting pages.
What about the two user models?
I’ve merged them. It wasn’t much more than adding extra fields to the
existing Radiant users table.

I wish… I request… I beg… Beast looks nice… If you feel it’s not
ready for release, can you ‘release’ it privately? Or, a few pointers
to get us started? The other recent option seems to be El Dorado. Not
sure about it, either.
Cheers,
Mohit.

The original Beast seems not to be maintained any more. Rick O. is
taking a step in another direction with “Altered Beast”. More details
at:
There is Savage Beast 2
Google Code Archive - Long-term storage for Google Code Project Hosting.
with the goal of being a pluginized Beast. Also, El Dorado
Google Code Archive - Long-term storage for Google Code Project Hosting.
which started somewhat of a phpBB clone.
I have no idea how hard/easy is to integrate any of these into Radiant.
