When I did this I got an error:

craig@lug:/opt/ruby/jruby/bin$ jruby.sh gem
/opt/ruby/jruby/bin/jruby.sh: 61: /opt/ruby/jruby/bin/jruby.sh: Bad substitution

Is this what you meant?

That’s a different error, but you can work around it by executing
jruby.sh with bash

e.g.

bash /opt/ruby/jruby/bin/jruby.sh -S gem
