Hello,

I have packaged up a simple Rails project into a .war file and deployed
it
to BEA Weblogic but I get an error and am not able to access it. I
tried
using warbler through a gem and a plugin and added all the gems that
were in
the Rails project. I am using Rails 1.2.5 with the newest version of
warbler. Below is the stack trace:

It looks like Weblogic is returning null from the call to
ServletContext.getRealPath(String). Any idea why that would be? We
need to know where on disk the war is deployed so we can set some
paths.

Thank you very much for your quick response. Do you need to know the
full
path or what? I placed it in the Autodeploy directory of the main
project
just as I do for all of the other .war files.

I will look into why its returning a null. Could it have been the way I
built the Rails .war?

I doubt it has anything to do with the way you built it. I guess this
is JRuby-Rack’s fault, since the servlet docs say that the method can
return null if the path translation can’t be performed. I just hadn’t
seen it happen yet until now.

The only workaround for now that I can suggest is to use a different
servlet container – Glassfish or Tomcat don’t appear to have this
problem. If you can research on the weblogic side why they don’t
perform the path translation, that would be good to know as well.

“The real path returned will be in a form appropriate to the computer
and operating system on which the servlet container is running,
including the proper path separators. This method returns null if the
servlet container cannot translate the virtual path to a real path for
any reason (such as when the content is being made available from a .war
archive).”

This applies to my situation. I was running the application from an
unpacked WAR file in Tomcat. Appearantly, the Jetty engine had no
problems with this setup.

I wrote a jRuby rack patch for the weblogic related issue when deploying
an application from a WAR-File. The patch contains a fallback mechanism
if getRealPath returns null and is not specifically bound to Weblogic.
So if other web containers have the same issue, the patch might help
here too.

I modified servlet_helper.rb as posted in diff file of Joern, manually
created the jar file, warble war and deployed to weblogic 10. Works
well! Maybe my error in previous post has something to do with
environment or the build
file?
